For this purpose, the most important highlights along the route were systematically compiled and the existing infrastructure surveyed.

These fundamentals are intended to help strengthen cross-border cooperation, develop joint approaches for the gentle use of the trail, and promote sustainable, future-oriented solutions for the region. The activities included, in particular, the documentation of relevant Points of Interest (POIs) along the E5, the evaluation and adjustment of the route, as well as the development of additional digital applications and information services.

The cooperation of the project partners across state borders creates a clear added value and helps to establish culture, sustainability, and innovation as central components of regional development – with positive effects on the economy, social participation, and the local quality of life.

Climate-Friendly Route Planning on the E5

The Alps are among the most sensitive natural areas in Europe. Glacier retreat, shifting vegetation zones, and more frequent extreme weather events clearly demonstrate the impact of climate change. Anyone undertaking the E5 Alpine crossing hikes right through this habitat – and bears responsibility for its preservation.

Climate-friendly planning of the route as well as the journey to and from the trail makes a significant contribution to reducing environmental impact and protecting the alpine environment in a sustainable way.

Why Climate-Friendly Behavior Matters

Long-distance hikers generally produce fewer emissions compared to many other types of holidays – however, the biggest factor is the choice of transportation for arrival and departure. In addition, behavior during the hike itself can actively contribute to greater sustainability.

Climate-friendly behavior includes in particular:

– Reduction of CO₂ emissions through travel to and from the destination by public transportation
– Protection of sensitive ecosystems by staying on marked trails
– Strengthening regional economic cycles by using local accommodations and restaurants
– Leading by example, inspiring others to adopt sustainable travel behavior

Sustainability does not only mean environmental protection, but also includes social and economic aspects. Traveling by public transportation also slows things down and is far more flexible than arriving by car. It also eliminates stress related to return transport, parking, and long drives home after the tour.

Arrival and Departure by Train & Bus

Large parts of the E5 are very well connected to the public transportation network. Both the starting point in Oberstdorf and the destination region in South Tyrol, as well as many stage locations, are easily accessible by train and regional bus.

– Stage 01 Oberstdorf: very well accessible by train
– Stage 02 Bach/Holzgau: well accessible by train and bus
– Stage 03 Memminger Hut: not suitable as an E5 starting point (several hours of hiking required plus shuttle from Bach to Madau)
– Stage 03 Alternative Ansbach Hut: see Memminger Hut
– Stage 04 Zams: very well accessible by train
– Stage 04 Alternative Zammer Ski Hut: 2-hour hike or shuttle required from Zams
– Stage 05 Mittelberg: well accessible by train and bus
– Stage 06 Sölden: well accessible by train and bus
– Stage 07 Zwieselstein: well accessible by train and bus
– Stage 08 Moos in Passeier/Moso in Passiria: well accessible by train and bus
– Stage 09 Pfandler Alm/Malga Pfandler: valley location St. Martin in Passeier well accessible by train and bus, followed by a 2-hour hike to the hut
– Stage 10 Hirzer Hut/Rifugio Hirzer: valley location Saltaus well accessible by train and bus, then take the Hirzer cable car to within 15 minutes of the hut
– Stage 11 Meran 2000/Merano 2000: valley location Meran very well accessible by train, followed by cable car and a 1-hour hike
– Stage 12 Jenesien/San Genesio Atesino: well accessible by train and bus
– Stage 13 Deutschnofen/Nova Ponente: well accessible by train and bus
– Stage 14 Start Oberradein/Redagno di Sopra: well accessible by train and bus
– Stage 14 End Gfrill/Cauria: return travel easily possible by bus and train

The following websites/apps help organize arrival and departure using public transportation and provide exact information on accessibility:

– Deutsche Bahn to bahn.de
– Österreichische Bundesbahn to oebb.at
– Südtirolmobil to suedtirolmobil.info
– Tren Italia to italiatren.com

The exact coordinates of the start and end points of each stage can be found on the respective stage description pages on the website.

Conclusion

The E5 Alpine crossing represents an intense experience of nature and conscious travel. Climate-friendly route planning – especially regarding arrival and departure – is an effective step to preserve this experience in the long term. Those who travel sustainably don’t just hike through the Alps; they also find themselves much more relaxed and flexible on their travels.

Green and Digital: Sustainable Behaviour in the Mountains

“Leave nothing behind except your footprints. Take nothing with you except your memories.” –Unknown

Plan Your Journey Sustainably

Travel in an environmentally friendly way, preferably by public transport or car sharing. Make use of sustainable tourism offers and stay in environmentally responsible accommodation.

Park Responsibly

Use designated parking areas, do not block access roads, and observe driving restrictions.

Avoid Waste

Pack your rucksack carefully and avoid unnecessary packaging when shopping. Use cloth bags or reusable lunch boxes for your provisions instead of plastic or aluminium foil. Take all rubbish back down to the valley and dispose of it properly. Citrus peels and banana skins should also be taken away, as they decompose very slowly in the mountains.

Relieve Yourself Responsibly

Keep a sufficient distance from streams, lakes, resting places, hiking trails and buildings. Use toilet paper instead of tissues and dig a small hole, which should ideally be covered with natural materials afterwards.

Respect Nature and the Landscape

Do not pick plants or disturb or feed animals. Observe wildlife only from a distance and avoid unnecessary noise – instead, enjoy the sounds of nature.

Be Aware of Forest Fire Risk

Do not smoke in forests or light fires.

Avoid Trail Damage and Erosion

Shortcuts across meadows damage the vegetation and can lead to erosion. To prevent this, trail maintenance teams invest considerable time and money each year in maintaining the hiking network. Please use existing paths and stay on marked trails and tracks.

Keep a Respectful Distance in Alpine Pasture Areas

Hikers increasingly encounter suckler cow herds in alpine pasture areas. Keeping a respectful distance and keeping dogs on a lead are essential to avoid attacks from mother cows protecting their calves. The same applies when encountering flocks protected by livestock guardian dogs. Close pasture gates behind you and follow all posted signs.

Twilight Is Feeding Time

Many animals use dawn and dusk to feed. Be aware that they are particularly sensitive during these times and avoid disturbing them through sporting activities.

(Source: https://alpenverein.it/umweltbewusstamberg/, slightly modified)

The Ecological Footprint of an E5 Hiking Journey

The E5 Alpine crossing is considered one of the most climate-friendly travel options. Movement takes place mainly on foot, stays in the region are relatively long, and much of the added value remains in the region. Nevertheless, greenhouse gas emissions are still generated, particularly through arrival and departure and indirect effects along the route.

A transparent understanding of the ecological footprint helps travellers better assess the impact of their journey and make informed decisions.

What Is the Ecological Footprint?

The ecological footprint refers to the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions caused by the trip, expressed in kilograms of CO2 equivalents per person. It includes all components, from arrival and departure to mobility along the route, accommodation, and catering.

This indicator allows comparison with other travel types. Long-distance hiking trips such as the E5 have a significantly lower footprint than many other forms of tourism, especially when public transport is used.

How Is the Footprint Calculated?

Calculations are typically based on certified tourism carbon footprint calculators, calculating the generated emissions as precise as possible. For this calculation the following aspects (travel modules) are considered:

Arrival and Departure

The by far largest share of emissions comes from transport choices to reach the starting point of the hike and to travel back from the final destination. For example train and bus travel for arrival and departure generate significantly fewer emissions than cars or flights.

Mobility Along the Route

Emissions during the hike itself are minimal, limited to occasional transfers such as public buses, private shuttle services or cable cars.

Accommodation and Catering

Indirect emissions arise from energy use and food production. However, based on the small-scaled structure and regional character of the businesses in this Alpine region, these impacts tend to be relatively low.

Overall Assessment

Overall, the ecological footprint of a multi-day E5 hiking trip is very low, particularly with climate-friendly travel choices. Compared to air travel, cruises, or motorised holidays, CO2 emissions are significantly lower.

The E5 can therefore be clearly positioned as a low-carbon travel experience, offering hikers the confidence to travel in an environmentally responsible way.

Conclusion

The ecological footprint analysis shows that hiking the E5 is already one of the most climate-friendly holiday options. Combined with sustainable travel choices and regional value creation, it creates a travel experience with comparatively low environmental impact.

E5 Stage Planning – Designing the Hiking Journey Day by Day

Modern long-distance hiking trips have evolved significantly in recent years. Individual customization, flexible planning, and a balanced mix of freedom, comfort, safety, and sustainability are now at the core of contemporary hiking experiences.

The ‘Plannable Stage’ as a core tool

A long-distance hike is ideally planned based on individual daily stages. These modular units enable flexible and personalized route planning, independent of fixed start or end points.

With the following planning approach, the E5 also offers flexible daily itinerary design tailored to individual needs.

Travel Parameters

Planning begins with defining key framework conditions such as arrival and departure dates, as well as starting and ending points. Rest days can be integrated, and individual stages can be skipped if suitable mobility options are available.

Stage Selection

The route is planned on the level of individual daily stages. These can be flexibly combined and adapted according to personal fitness levels, available time, and individual preferences.

Services Along the Route

Support services enhance comfort and safety. These include luggage transport, shuttle and transfer services, connections to public transport, and digital route information such as GPX tracks. Additional information and emergency services are also available.

Accommodation and Catering

Accommodation options range from simple alpine huts to comfortable hotels, always depending on the available range of different accommodations options at the respected stage points. Catering options vary from self-catering to half-board, including regional and specialized (e.g. vegetarians or vegans) offers, as well as taking health issues (e.g. allergies and intolerances) into account.

Flexible Combinations Instead of Fixed Packages

Stage-based planning enables a high degree of personalization and flexibility. Each stage acts as an individual building block that can be flexibly combined with others, resulting in a tailor-made route aligned with personal needs.

Conclusion

Stage-based planning offers the ideal balance between individual freedom and a structured travel experience. By combining flexible stages, supportive services, and suitable accommodations, hikers can create an adaptable and sustainable long-distance journey that meets the expectations of today’s travellers.

The project aims to further develop and enhance the E5 long-distance hiking trail in North and South Tyrol through digital measures with a focus on sustainability.
